The Millmerran Multipurpose Health Service will be holding the biennial health expo at the Millmerran Sports Centre on Thursday May 20th, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. Please note the new venue.

This year we are asking a wider range of health service providers, sports, craft and beauty services. In past years, exhibitor feedback indicated that the Expo is a valuable tool in promoting their business or activity in this community.

The Expo will be open to the public of all ages, free of charge to access the many displays featured. Schools will be invited to come along. There will be activities eg. food and nutrition for school students to take part in. This Expo will give our community more insight into the services available locally and regionally.

When the marquees go up and the plants, food and wine start moving in for the 2010 Heritage Building Society Gardenfest, the site will be transformed into a massive scarecrow convention thanks to the students of local schools.
The inaugural Scare Garden competition will be a major feature of this year’s Heritage Building Society Gardenfest with schools from around the region registering to participate in the group activity.
Heritage Building Society Gardenfest Schools Convenor Emily Murphy says that students are taking up the challenge to create all types of scarecrows.
“There will be very scary ones, traditional ones and no doubt some very innovative scarecrows that will have the skies around the 2010 Heritage Building Society Gardenfest clear of crows and other garden pests,” she said.
“Our school program aims to encourage primary school students to think positively about getting their hands dirty in the garden in a fun and creative way.
“The winner of the competition, which will consist of a number of categories, will be determined by the public, so make sure you vote for your favourite scarecrow at Heritage Building Society Gardenfest on May 1, 2 and 3 2010.”

Five recruits on Lifeline’s Green Army Recycling project have graduated with new skills and self-confidence after completing 23 weeks paid work. The State Government provided $228,000 to the Queensland’s Green Army project to employ 12 jobseekers at Lifeline’s Distribution Centre and Smart Tip Shop to reduce landfill by identifying reusable and recyclable materials.

Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland Business Coordinator Angela Klein said the project included some accredited training so participants worked safely and gained some valuable skills. “Two participants have earned their fork lift licences and another completed a course and gained a Statement of Attainment so he can check, test and tag electrical equipment as safe.” Ms Klein said “We’ve also helped each person to improve their resume and we will keep supporting them as they start searching for their next jobs.”

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine attended the event and said the project had helped the wider community while offering the participants an excellent chance to sharpen their workplace skills. “All jobseekers can check their eligibility and I encourage them to register their interest in joining a Queensland’s Green Army project like this through the website www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 369 925.”

Toowoomba Hospice will be holding its annual Car Park Sale on Saturday 6th February, from 6.00am till 11am.

Organiser Mr Norm Jenner said the Hospice relies heavily on the community spirit to raise the much needed funds to serve our local community. “I am inviting the community to come on Saturday and make a donation by purchasing items that we have been given to sell. At 8am there will be an auction of interesting and unusual items.

The location will be in the main Car Park at the Hospice, corner of 5th Avenue and O’Quinn St, Harristown.
Mr. Jenner also encourages the community to donate items for the Car Park Sale. “If you have items that you would like to donate to the Hospice Garage Sale please drop them in to the Hospice Admin office during office hours this week by Friday Morning. However if you have large items can you please drop them off on the Saturday morning of the Car Park sale (Saturday 6th February) between 5.30am and 7am as our storage is very limited.

” Mr. Jenner wanted to reassure all those who support the Car Park Sale that all the money stays here “The Hospice is a Local Charity and I am very proud to say that the money raised locally stays locally. Our operational purchases also support local businesses, companies and individuals on the Downs”

Mr. Jenner added that what ever isn’t sold by 11am Saturday will be donated to Life Line to sell in their shops. “I am more than happy to let another charity have what is left so they too can benefit”
