A public lecture conducted by the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Toowoomba – 20 July 2010

Louise Schofield, an internationally recognized archaeological expert, will present a lecture on Ethiopian art and archaeology for the Toowoomba Group of the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) on 20 July.

Following a career as Curator of Greek Bronze Age and Geometric Antiquities at the British Museum, Louise is now engaged in conducting archaeological projects in Ethiopia, Turkey and Greece.  Her latest book The Mycenaeans was published jointly by the British and Getty Museums.

Ethiopia is a mysterious and deeply atmospheric country steeped in history and legend. Its people live a life that is truly biblical and timeless surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Their ancient history features countless famous names including that of the Queen of Sheba who is reputed to have once ruled over large stretches of the north of the country. Drawing on her extensive background in the archaeology and art of Ethiopia, Louise will inform and entertain her listeners.

Louise Schofield’s lecture will be given in the Glennie Room, The Glennie School, Herries Street, Toowoomba on Tuesday 20 July starting at 6.45 pm and will be followed by supper. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The cost is $20 for persons who are not members of ADFAS and $10 for students.

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine says the awards honour achievements across a host of industries vital to the state’s success.

“Queensland’s vocational education and training programs are highly regarded around the world and, at a local level, help communities reap the benefits of skilled workers and competitive industries,” Mr Shine said.

Mr Shine said the Darling Downs South West region finals, one of seven being staged across Queensland, will be held at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre on Friday July 30, 2010.

Winners then progress to the state final in September at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, where finalists in a further four categories will also be presented.  State winners will also have the chance to enter the Australian Training Awards in Sydney in November.

The Queensland Training Awards, now in their 49^th year, are run by the Queensland Government’s Department of Education and Training.

Wilsonton Lions Club has continued to show their support to the Toowoomba Hospice by supporting the ‘Adopt A Room’ Campaign for $3,500.00 to help with the care of people who are suffering from a terminal illness.

Toowoomba Hospice Chairman Mr. Graham Barron OAM said “The Wilsonton Lions Club has again shown their support by giving us money that can be used to help our clients have a more comfortable stay while we are caring for them in the Hospice. We are very fortunate to have strong community support, and Wilsonton Lions Club is no exception.”

President of the Wilsonton Lions Mrs. Elaine Kieseker said “The Wilsonton Lions Club is made up of ordinary people doing extraordinary things – supporting people with a disability, community greening, and fundraising for worthwhile causes.”

“Those who Adopt a Room will be adding to the dignity and calmness that surrounds a client during their last stages of life”, said Mr. Barron “Our Adopt A Room Campaign is used to maintain a fresh and comfortable environment when required; fresh paint, touch ups, purchase furnishings/furniture for the room as well as general maintenance”

Toowoomba Hospice is a not-for-profit, community facility, caring for people with a terminal illness and their families at no cost. The Hospice is located in O’Quinn Street, Toowoomba  and needs to raise valuable funds to keep the service running.

Each month the Jondaryan Woolshed presents the best of local musical talent at its Big Country Sunday Brunch and guests at this weekend’s event will be delighted with the Brunch debut of the Spyglass Drive trio.

Spyglass Drive is an energetic ensemble playing upbeat interpretations of jazz, country and rock. Featuring Graham Muller on piano, Camillo Lanzafame on electric bass and Gary Poole on drums and vocals, Spyglass Drive performs regularly at venues around Toowoomba including the Toowoomba Jazz Club, the Toowoomba City Golf Club and the Picnic Point Function Centre.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Peter Taylor says “The Jondaryan Woolshed has developed a well-deserved reputation for supporting and promoting local talent at its monthly brunch. The Darling Downs has a huge pool of creative talent and the Woolshed provides a stage for some of our best musicians.
